“Be filled with the Spirit.” — Ephesians 5:18
Imagine today is Black Friday. You wake up before dawn to catch those early “door buster” deals, and speed into the store parking lot. With a fresh cup of coffee in hand, you dart out of your vehicle, and, in your rush, accidentally drop your cup, spilling its contents all over yourself. An older gentleman passing by stops to ask, “Why did you spill your coffee?”
You snap back: “I hit my arm getting out of the car!”
The stranger lightly chuckles. “No, that’s not it. You spilled your coffee, because that’s what you had in your cup.” And with that, he leisurely walks away with a skip in his step and a whistle on his lips.
The moral of the story is this: Whatever is inside your cup will surely spill out. So ask yourself today, “What’s in my cup?” When life gets tough and jostles you, what spills over? Is your cup filled to the rim with faith in Jesus—crucified and resurrected— which results in godly joy, gratefulness, mercy, and peace? Or, is it overflowing with carnal anger, bitterness, doubting resentment, worry and hatred? The Lord gives the cup, but you get to choose its contents. Choose to be filled with His Spirit. “Take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD” (Psalm 116:13). “For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved" (Romans 10:13 ESV).
