“He is before all things, and by Him all things consist.” —Colossians 1:17
One Thanksgiving Day a big Christmas parade took place in a large city. Featured . . . were all those things one might expect to see in a big Christmas parade: floats, balloons, marching bands, dancers, clowns; and, of course, an appearance by Santa Clause.
Near the end of the parade was a large float featuring a live nativity scene sponsored by a local church. As this float came into view an onlooker said in contempt and disgust, “I can’t believe the nerve some people have to interject religion into Christmas!”
Well, . . . believe it!
Without Christ there is no Christmas. His birth is the reason why we celebrate—“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11). But sadly many retailers who are ambivalent at best toward Christ’s birth, use His birthday as the means to achieve their best sales of the year; and many like-minded consumers are all too glad to help them achieve their goal.
But we, as solemn believers, can resolve to keep Christ in Christmas this year, as well as every year to come. We can put Him at the top of our holiday traditions, activities, and festivities! We can put Him at the top of our greetings, gatherings, and giving!
“As now we celebrate His birth,
The coming of the Christ to earth,
May we, amid our joyous mirth,
Keep Jesus first in Christmas!”
